Week 30 - Getting Started

Last week I enrolled  for the course Music Foundations at the Open College of the Arts.
I am sifting through the course material and the digital student environment material.

I feel so many things now; I find it hard to grasp just one emotion.
Self doubt, excitement....will I finish what I started this time?

I really want to...I want to create.

But, is this really my calling? Or am I fooling myself with a romantic dream?
Could I be a musician?

The best way to deal with these self built barricades, is to start chipping away at them.

Step 1....start reading....start walking the walk.

Week 26-27: What is temperament in music?

The past two weeks I have been looking into temperament. In the beginning I was rather ignorant about temperaments; isn't tuning an obvious thing you do to an instrument? And why not settle for one tuning that "sounds right"? There is, of course, more too it. Actually, during the Baroque era, musicians and composers experimented with harmony and with different tunings. They started to invent new tuning methods, aside from the just and Medieval Pythagorean systems. This development was probably driven by the keyboard instruments and also the harp: instruments that are not easily tuned to all keys. Playing in a different key would cause dissonant intervals, called "wolf tones". A work around was to develop a tuning system that would - for lack of a better expression - spread the dissonance over the different keys. In that way music could be adapted to all the keys. Week 4: Writing out The Huckleberry Hornpipe by Byron Berline

1. Stuff done this week - Read up on music theory in the OCA Music Foundations course. - Feeling more confident I asked for an assignment from my mandolin teacher Thijs Rührup . This week, he challenged me to write out a piece of music played to me.  I recorded his version of Byron Berline's Huckleberry Hornpipe , a texas swing fiddle piece in the key of A, which also sounds great on the mandolin. The tune, in 4/4 time, features three melody sections A, B and C of 8 bars that are played twice, each with another ending. The exercise provided me with another opportunity to practice some more with Sibelius and to also train my musical hearing. I did not include the slides; I still don't know how to note them down in Sibelius. Discussing this piece with my mandolin teacher, I learned I made some mistakes in my use of accidentals. Week 7: Madrigals and secular songs in the 16th century

1. Stuff done this week - Read chapter 11 from Burkholder et al. (2014); my notes are presented below. - Practicing the Temperance Reel, an Irish tune my mandolin teacher gave as homework. - Me and the band recorded the song "Cold Black Ground" written by Dikkie; I play some harmonica and sung some backing vocals. We are rather proud of the result. Hope people will like it. At the moment it is being mixed. 2. Listening done Listened to the work of   John Dowland (1563-1626)   and songs by  Miranda Sex Garden  a music group from London, England. They formed in 1990 as a trio of madrigal singers. Their first album, Madra (1991), was sung a cappella, with the songs all based on traditional English verse. I bought their third album   Sunshine  (1993) in the early nineties.
