Week 44 - Medieval Music in the First Millenium

1. Stuff done this week I read chapters on Medieval music from Burkholder et al. (2014). For mandolin parctice, I practiced tremolo. This is a fundamental skill on the instrument, and a characteristic part of the sound of the mandolin in almost every kind of music that people play on the instrument. You hear it in "The Godfather" (Italian style) and you hear it in "Kentucky Waltz" (bluegrass style). Something I should be practicing much more; a sweet, smooth tremolo is rather pleasant to listen to. Also it is the only way to sustain notes on this instrument, for it does not have a great sustain. 2. Listening done this week Listened to a lot of tunes from Bradlee Scott's Postmodern Jukebox . Usually I dislike cover songs "in the style of..". We have had enough bluegrass versions of acdc songs and it is becoming a cheap trick to get a laugh from audiences. Scott Bradlee to some extent does this too, but there are some incredible gems. The...

Week 3: Four Musical Instruments of the Renaissance

Image
1. Stuff done this week - I researched how musical instruments are classified into groups or families. In this blog I present my notes on how these groups are defined. - I continued the timeline I presented in my blog of week 52. - I picked four instruments from the Renaissance and wrote brief descriptions of them. Notes are presented in this blog. 2. Classification of Musical Instruments Below, I present a formal classification of musical instruments. Woodwind: Wind instruments that have an enclosed, vibrating air column set into motion by a reed or by blowing across or through an aperture (example: flute). They are distinct from brass instruments, in which the air column is set into motion by the vibration of the player's lips. Keyboard instruments sounded by the same means as woodwinds, such as the organ, are ...

Weeks 44-45: Music for Chamber and Church in the Early 17th Century (Part II)

Image
1.  Stuff done these weeks Continued my study of Baroque era music forms. My notes from Burkholder et al. (2014) are presented below. 2.  Listening done these weeks Fascinating, complex song  by 70's folk singer  Judee Sill ( 1944 – 1979). It  draws on church liturgy and almost has the feel of a polyphonic Mass . "Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison Kyrie eleison, eleison, Eleison, eleison Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison So sad, and so true That even shadows come And hum the requiem..." Judee Sill - The Donor There is an interesting documentary on her life; the years of her short life (only 35!) were invariably harsh. The Lost Genius of Judee Sill (2014 BBC Radio Documentary) 3. What I have learned Lutheran Church Music In German speaking regions, composers in both the Catholic and Lutheran churches adopted the new monodic and concertato techniques. Alongside compositions in modern style, Lutheran composers a...
