Week 44 - Medieval Music in the First Millenium

1. Stuff done this week I read chapters on Medieval music from Burkholder et al. (2014). For mandolin parctice, I practiced tremolo. This is a fundamental skill on the instrument, and a characteristic part of the sound of the mandolin in almost every kind of music that people play on the instrument. You hear it in "The Godfather" (Italian style) and you hear it in "Kentucky Waltz" (bluegrass style). Something I should be practicing much more; a sweet, smooth tremolo is rather pleasant to listen to. Also it is the only way to sustain notes on this instrument, for it does not have a great sustain. 2. Listening done this week Listened to a lot of tunes from Bradlee Scott's Postmodern Jukebox . Usually I dislike cover songs "in the style of..". We have had enough bluegrass versions of acdc songs and it is becoming a cheap trick to get a laugh from audiences. Week 7: Madrigals and secular songs in the 16th century

1. Stuff done this week - Read chapter 11 from Burkholder et al. (2014); my notes are presented below. - Practicing the Temperance Reel, an Irish tune my mandolin teacher gave as homework. - Me and the band recorded the song "Cold Black Ground" written by Dikkie; I play some harmonica and sung some backing vocals. We are rather proud of the result. Hope people will like it. At the moment it is being mixed. 2. Listening done Listened to the work of   John Dowland (1563-1626)   and songs by  Miranda Sex Garden  a music group from London, England. They formed in 1990 as a trio of madrigal singers. Their first album, Madra (1991), was sung a cappella, with the songs all based on traditional English verse. I bought their third album   Sunshine  (1993) in the early nineties. Week 3: Four Musical Instruments of the Renaissance

1. Stuff done this week - I researched how musical instruments are classified into groups or families. In this blog I present my notes on how these groups are defined. - I continued the timeline I presented in my blog of week 52. - I picked four instruments from the Renaissance and wrote brief descriptions of them. Notes are presented in this blog. 2. Classification of Musical Instruments Below, I present a formal classification of musical instruments. I based it on descriptions from the  The Harvard Dictionary of Music (Randel, 2003): Strings: The stringed instruments (string section) of an orchestra. Woodwind: Wind instruments that have an enclosed, vibrating air column set into motion by a reed or by blowing across or through an aperture (example: flute). They are distinct from brass instruments, in which the air column is set into motion by the vibration of the player's lips.
